Hazelwood Green Will Be Home For Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Institute

The Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Institute will be one of the anchor tenants of Hazelwood Green, the former Jones & Laughlin Steel site in Hazelwood that is being redeveloped for mixed uses, Carnegie Mellon University has announced.
The ARM Institute, as well as CMU’s Manufacturing Futures Initiative, will occupy two floors of a 94,000-square-foot building being constructed within the enormous steel skeleton of the historic steel mill known as Mill 19.
The last vestige of the steel plant, a coke works, ended operations on the site in 1998. The vacant 178-acre site along the Monongahela River most recently was used as a testing ground for self-driving vehicles. Those included CMU’s Boss, the self-driving SUV that won the 2007 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Urban Challenge, as well as a number of the Robotics Institute’s autonomous rovers and drones.
