From the hallways of hospitals to the farthest reaches of outer space, robots are transforming the way we interact with our world. In her new book “Robots,” Henny Admoni, associate professor at the Robotics Institute, takes young readers on a literary journey through the multiple ways robots can assist humans and shape our future.
Neon Squid, a publishing branch of MacMillan, reached out to Admoni and asked if she would lend her expertise and write a children’s book about robots. She gladly accepted, eager for the opportunity to translate the broad world of robotics into more digestible rhetoric. Though the book is focused toward 8 to 10 year-olds, anyone who is interested in AI, robots, and technology of the future can enjoy “Robots”.
With stunning illustrations by Amy Grimes, “Robots” holds an impressive amount of information, bringing Dr. Admoni’s content visually to life.
“I had to figure out what in the abundance of the field of robotics should be included in a book with just 35 spreads,” said Admoni. “What do I think is important enough to make it in there?”
Using her vast knowledge and experience in robotics, Admoni manages to incorporate highly technical information with aspects of robotics that are simpler to explain.
“It’s especially hard when talking about things like motors because that can be very technical, but there’s lots of content that’s less technical,” said Admoni. “I drew a lot of inspiration from what I’ve seen from my colleagues here.”
This is professor Admoni’s first published book, and she hopes to write another in the future that can further assist a wide variety of audiences with learning about robots, their functions, and the future possibilities of AI and technology.
“Robots” is available for pre-order now, and the book will be available in-stores starting on October 1st. Learn more about Dr. Admoni and her work at the Robotics Institute on the Human and Robot Partners lab page.
