Bridging the gap: Art and Computer Vision

Event Location: NSH 1507
Bio: David Tinapple is part artist and part engineer. Central to his art
practice is the creation of his own tools and systems for manipulating
images, video, sound, and human interaction. Drawing from a background in
multimedia production and interaction design, Tinapple creates performance
tools, interactive video environments, and media installations. His aim is
to illuminate the forces at work around us and within us, explore our
assumptions about the world and reveal surprises about everyday life.
Tinapple is currently completing a Master’s of Fine Art at Carnegie Mellon
University. He will teach Digital Media in the Department of Art at UNC
Chapel Hill starting in the fall.

Abstract: In this talk I show the evolution of my art practice, including how it has
been shaped by the tools and techniques I use and create to explore and
manipulate images, video, sound and human interaction. I will describe a
few projects that involve creating custom software systems and show how
these tools were conceived.

I describe the creation of an automatic video editing system that edits
material based on visual or audible qualities in the source footage. In
another project, a computer vision system tracks and compiles the faces
that appear on network TV news, or in another instance, that appear in a
gallery installation.

I also look at a series of work dealing with processing images and video
using a line-scan technique. This series treats video material as a volume
of data that can be sliced through and examined along its temporal
dimension.
