Perception for Autonomous Trucks: Lessons from the Trenches

Abstract:  Autonomous trucks have the potential to fundamentally change modern logistics and supply chains while improving road safety. In this talk we outline some of the technical challenges of building a perception system for this problem and walk through some of the lessons learned while building this technology to operate in the real world.

Bio:  Varun Ramakrishna is the Senior Director of Perception at Aurora Innovation. He received a PhD degree from Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute in 2015 advised by Prof. Takeo Kanade and Prof. Yaser Sheikh. He worked on Perception and Mapping at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Center before joining the founding team at Aurora. He has also spent time at Microsoft Research and Disney Research. His research and technical interests are in the areas of building production level machine learning and computer vision systems that operate in the real world.
