Jun-Yan Zhu, an Assistant Professor at the Robotics Institute in Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science, has been selected as a 2024 Samsung AI Researcher of the Year.
Samsung’s AI Researcher of the Year program recognizes five promising researchers under 35 who have made outstanding contributions to artificial intelligence research. The recipients receive $30,000 in prize money.
Zhu’s research lies at the intersection of computer vision, computer graphics, and machine learning. He leads the Generative Intelligence Lab, with the mission of studying the collaboration between human creators and generative models. This human-centered, generative modeling approach can empower creators with generative AI while retaining control over the creation process and data ownership.
Zhu also holds affiliated faculty appointments in the Computer Science Department and Machine Learning Department. Prior to joining CMU, he earned his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and did his postdoc at MIT CSAIL. Previously, his work has been awarded the Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering, the NSF CAREER Award, the ACM SIGGRAPH Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, and the UC Berkeley EECS David J. Sakrison Memorial Prize for outstanding doctoral research, among other awards.
