Medical Robotics: ENT surgical augmentation
Project Head: Nicolas Mateo Zevallos-Roberts
This project intends to facilitate the automatic recreation of surgical procedures practiced on bone phantoms from CT scans on real patients. This way, the surgeon can practice as many times as needed until the desired result is achieved on a 3D printed phantom, then have a robot perform exactly the same procedure. Working with doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, we are exploring different methods of capturing and repeating surgical removal of bone during mastoidectomy, a procedure that requires extreme care and precision around one of the main nerves of the face.
