Robotics is driven by the integration of 4 key research themes. Our curriculum is informed and crafted around building robotic systems that can sense, think, and act in the real-world.
Sensing & Perception
Sensing and perception in robotics involve the developing systems that enable robots to interpret and interact with their surroundings.
Thinking About Actions
Thinking about actions involves advancing a robots’ ability to plan and make informed decisions.
Interacting with the World
This research focuses on robot safety, manipulation, human-robot interaction, and real-world deployment.
Robot Embodiment
Robot embodiment focuses on optimizing the form of the robot for diverse environments and enhancing their adaptability and functionality.
Where We Shine
Computer Vision
The robust computer vision research at CMU has led to breakthroughs in 3D scene reconstruction, object recognition, autonomous vehicles, agricultural monitoring, and beyond. We have several labs, facilities, faculty, and students dedicated to enhancing multifaceted computer vision research, Our constant driving to enable machines to interpret and understand the visual world places us a global leader in the field.
Field Robotics
Field robotics includes the automation of land, sea and air platforms with applications in mining, cargo handling, agriculture, underwater exploration and exploitation, highways, planetary exploration, coastal surveillance and rescue. The CMU field robotics center continues to expand the boundaries of what a robot can do in the real world. We are some of the first to send robots everywhere from inside volcanoes, to deep water, to the moon and Mars.
Human Robot Interaction
CMU hosts some of the leading experts in human-robot interaction. Faculty, students, and researchers continually produce innovative projects that focus on using robotics to serve and help people for years to come. Prosthetics, assistive feeding devices, robotic wheelchairs, natural language models, and companion robots are just a few of the diverse accomplishments CMU has achieved and continues to progress in human-robot interaction.
Healthcare Robotics
CMU is a premier institution for solving complex healthcare challenges through robotics. Here, researchers develop robots for minimally invasive surgeries, intelligent prosthetics, precise AI systems to analyze medical imaging, and more. CMU partners with medical experts and industry specialists at several renowned institutions to make tangible impacts in the world of healthcare.
